O n addition to the famous battles, sieges and large-scale maneuvers, the war in the Middle Ages and early Modern Ages also involved murder, kidnapping, treason and sabotage . These were covert operations to target people who were important, especially sovereign or enemy commanders, and fortified positions of strategic importance, among which include bridges, mills and dams. Since it was clandestine operations, the sources do not provide much of the time, and there are, therefore, detailed studies on the subject. This book thus represents the first investigation specifically devoted to covert operations by the twelfth to sixteenth century. The analytical framework of Harari on covert operations, strategy and policy is an introduction to a very detailed review of six episodes: the betrayal of Antioch in 1098, the attempt to Baldwin II's release from prison in 1123 Khartpert; the murder of Conrad of Montferrat in 1192, the attempt to storm in Calais in 1350, the "dirty war" between the French crown and the house of Burgundy in the years 1467-1483, the destruction of the mill of Auriol in 1536.
