"Melancholia" by Dürer Sloth, disaffection that eats life
The sloth is a vice that at first appears harmless, almost cute, makes you smile, but in reality is among the most dangerous. No coincidence that over the centuries to the teachings of wisdom (see the wisdom books of the Bible) and literature (see Dante) were strongly lashed out against this sin, which is very often the only Trojan to be dragged into greater evils.
A classic example is the episode of David and Bathsheba, which begins: "the time when kings go to war" David sent the army to fight but stay home. This lazy behavior is primarily a violation of the role of the king, who was also a military leader, but also trigger a tragedy: David, bored, laid eyes on Bathsheba, the wife of his general who is fighting at the front, the want, take it for himself and sent home, of course, she becomes pregnant. The risk is that the woman accused of adultery, reveal who has committed the crime, condemning David himself, he then calls her husband from the front to ensure that, having spent some time at home, there are doubts about the paternity the unborn child, but the righteous warrior Uriah, law-abiding, refuses to go with his wife in time of war. A David did not just have an extreme gesture, the murder of his faithful warrior away so he can legally marry Bathsheba.
This is the mechanism of sloth, which lures with a state of no interest at all, and it 'so that one wants to be somewhere else to do anything else that triggers boredom, an invitation to fill the time with anything - and here comes the next sin that seems to be "free from boredom," and is beyond our moral barriers more easily.
Laziness s'ammanta a soft sadness, melancholy, very different from contrition of repentance: there is disaffection from it all, you do not feel interest in anything, you delay or avoid the choices that bring about a certain employer, justifying it with the classic "so it's useless." This lack of passion is actually synonymous with a lack of faith that is hope, confidence, passion, overwhelming, and as such is strongly denounced by the Jesus of Revelation, which announces that the lukewarm and the undecided will be spewed by God - is similar hardness in Dante, that the membership of hell coming off sloth: I do not want anyone because "they were never alive."
To confirm the equivalence of the opposite is often true, it is noteworthy that not slothful only he who does not want to do anything, but who wants to do everything, never to be satisfied with nothing and going from one experience to another, without a meaning, a direction, but this type of behavior is equivalent to not choose, do not take sides, not passionate, and you end up replacing the relations with a thousand feelings and experiences that ultimately left empty, exhausted.
Among the remedies will include sloth and temperance. The first is required to overcome the alienation and melancholy weariness: it gives us a rule to act even when you feel like it (eg how many times prayer becomes difficult, and must decide to pray ), The second is the simplicity of life, refusing to eat everything, to swallow life without taste it, can enjoy expertly, and so passionate.
